Deputy Howard Hagwood succumbed to injuries sustained two weeks earlier when his patrol car was struck by a train.
He was responding to assist other deputies search for a gunman when he attempted to cross a railroad crossing as the train approached.
He suffered severe injuries in the accident and was transported to a local hospital. He remained in the hospital for two weeks until succumbing to his injuries.
Deputy Hagwood had served with the Forrest County Sheriff's Office for 7 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.
