Add to My HeroesLarry Dale Cottingham
Sergeant Larry Cottingham suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after disarming a suicidal woman.
Sergeant Cottingham had responded to the scene, calmed and disarmed the woman, and then escorted her to the local emergency room.
Shortly after returning to the station, Sergeant Cottingham started to feel ill and called a fellow deputy who lived nearby to ask for assistance. The deputy responded to the station and immediately transported Sergeant Cottingham to the hospital. Doctors determined that he was too weak to undergo surgery. He remained in intensive care until passing away two days later.
Sergeant Cottingham was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. He had served with the Henderson County Sheriff's Office for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, three sons, two sisters, and two grandchildren.

Most Recent Reflection
View all 55 ReflectionsI absolutely wish we had more time together. I always say I only seen you during holidays(sometimes) and when you slept. You where the hardest working man I've ever know not only working as a full time deputy but as security at Ellis park. I remember all the stories and all the memories I was lucky enough to hear and share with you.
Wish you was here to see the man I have become and to meet your great grandchildren. Wish you was here to see your other grandchild(Brandi my sister) walk down the isle. I hope I've made you proud and I hope you are smiling from heaven right next to mamaw.
I love you and miss you papaw.
