Detective LaVern Brann was shot and killed while he and his partner were investigating a homicide that had occurred the previous month.

The shooting occurred when the two went to an apartment complex at 140 Brewer Drive to interview a woman and her mother. Detective Brann went to the front of the apartment complex while his partner went to the back of the building.

While in the rear, Detective Brann's partner heard gunshots fired from the front of the complex. When he ran to investigate, he was met by an armed man. The two exchanged gunfire, and the detective was shot in the leg as the suspect fled the scene.

When backup officers arrived, they found Detective Brann shot in the stairwell of the complex. He was transported to Battle Creek Health Systems, where he died from his wounds.

Hey Vern, like your wife, I have visited this site more times than I can count and not been able to leave a thought, I’ll try. It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years today since you left us. Sometimes it seems like yesterday, sometimes it’s an eternity.
They say time heals all wounds, it doesn't. We talked about a lot of things that day. What we were going to do after retirement, going fishing, but mostly we talked about your wife and daughters. Your love for them is undeniable.
Our shift ended at 1600, we could have gone home, but that wasn’t who you were. We were seeking justice for Eunice and had a mission to accomplish. By 1618 you were gone!!! Brother, I wish we had gone fishing.
I think about you multiple times every day, what might have been. I miss you and will never forget you. Until we meet again, Godspeed.
