Chief Berendes was beaten to death with a shovel while investigating a burglary at a local garage. The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to 50 years, but was paroled less then three years later.

Chief Berendes had served with the agency for 13 years. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.

On this 50th year anniversary of the passing of an Officer who was sworn to serve and protect, a Father, Husband and Grandfather I offer my condolences. I offer an apology to the family and friends and Bellevue Police Department and the city of Bellevue, Iowa.
I offer this apology on behalf of those that were involved in this senseless act.
