Officer Matt Rittenhouse was killed in an automobile collision when his patrol car went out of control shortly before midnight.
It is believed that severe weather and rain-slicked roads, the result of Hurricane Ivan, contributed to the crash.

I have been picturing you in heaven all day celebrating your birthday , but still just wondering how you’re not here too. Thank goodness time has no boundaries anymore, it’s like you were just here hugging us, making us laugh, being you, which means life is the best because we’re all together. Thank you for my beautiful cards. Dad had barely left for DC and I was already opening the cards from him and you. You both knew I wouldn’t be able to wait lol. It helped me be able to start Mother’s Day and your birthday. It was a great day with your sisters and precious River. I know you and Lynnlee must look down here and laugh as much as we do at all his funny little antics. Can’t help but think he has a lot of Uncle Matt in him .
Watch over Dad up at police week with all his fellow officers. We’re so proud of you and the man you are. I love you forever to eternity and beyond my beautiful smiling eyes son.
