Officer Paul Pino was killed when his patrol car was struck from behind while he made a traffic stop on U.S. 395 near Owens Valley.

The impact of the crash pushed Officer Pino's patrol car underneath the flatbed truck he had stopped. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the vehicle that struck his car, was booked for investigation of manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol. She is being held at the Inyo County Jail on $250,000 bail. I worked with Paul in Barstow
and had the honor of being his sergeant for two years at the Lone Pine/Death Valley Resident Post. No better Officer ever served in the CHP. I remember our shift sergeant in Barstow at every briefing had Paul stand up and then introduced him as “Officer Paul Pino of the California Highway Patrol.” It seemed odd at the time but entirely appropriate now. RIP brother.
