Assistant Marshal Davis was shot and killed by a man he had previously arrested. Marshal Davis was standing on a street corner near the town square when the man walked up to him. The man then shot him twice without any warning, killing him instantly. The suspect then walked a short distance away and committed suicide.

Assistant Marshal Davis had only served with the Nelsonville Police Department for 30 days, and was survived by his wife and three children.

Your heroism and service is honored today as we approach the one hundred and twenty first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer, 117 years after you were killed.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
