Marshal Garland was shot and killed when he responded to reports about a drunk soldier. He was shot in the chest by the soldier when he attempted to arrest him. The suspect was apprehended and charged with desertion and first degree murder.

Marshal Garland had been with agency for eight months and was survived by his wife and three children.
