Deputy Sheriff Renee Azure was killed in an automobile crash while responding to a burglar alarm in Raiford at 12:20 am.

During the response, her patrol car went out of control on SR-121 just north of Lake Butler and struck several trees. Deputy Azure was thrown from the patrol car and died at the scene.

Deputy Azure had served with the Union County Sheriff's Office for five months, was their first female deputy, and had been in law enforcement for two years. She is survived by her 3-year-old daughter, parents, and sister.

My precious baby girl, 22 years ago today we lost you, just when you feel time will never go on, well…. It didn’t stop or even slow down and it doesn’t heal your heart, you just learn to get up and face another day without your child. Not only did we lose you that awful day, but our second grandchild went with you, one day we will meet them. You left behind your beautiful daughter who has grown to follow in your steps, she patrols the streets in Tallahassee and your sister the same in Marion County. You have a niece who has a phone to heaven and she talks to you all the time, she just turned 7, her and your nephew talk about you often. May precious girl, continue to watch over us all and please protect your daughter, your sister your niece and nephew. I love you and miss you so very much.
