Detective Sergeant Bayer succumbed to injuries he sustained when he attempted to stop a disturbance at a local bar/dance hall at Bagley and Hubbard streets.

Detective Bayer, who was on the department's Pick-Pocket Squad, was beaten and suffered strikes to the neck and chest while trying to stop a fight that began between a father and son and soon spread. It is believed Detective Bayer suffered a heart attack during his attempts to stop the disturbance. He died en route to the hospital.

Detective Bayer served with the Detroit Police Department for 15 years. He was survived by his wife.
