Charlie Luther Johnson

Policeman Charlie Johnson was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man for drinking in public.

Policeman Johnson and the chief of police encountered the drunk subject on Park Avenue at 8:00 p.m. As they were placing him under arrest, the man suddenly pulled out a pistol and opened fire, wounding the chief and fatally wounding Policeman Johnson in the chest. The chief was able to return fire and kill the suspect.

Policeman Johnson had served with the Aiken Department of Public Safety for one year. He was survived by his wife and five children.
