Special Sheriff's Deputy Virgil Wiatrek was shot and killed in the line of duty.

Deputy Wiatrek of Karnes City was killed on a Saturday night in a dance hall brawl that he and another deputy were trying to break up. Wiatrek was shot three times when a youth grabbed another deputy's gun and turned it on the two officers as they attempted to stop a fight in which a man had been stabbed.
