Chief of Police James Dacy was accidentally shot and killed when his shotgun discharged as he attempted to retrieve it from his trunk.
The incident occurred when he responded to a call about a stray dog in a local cemetery. The shotgun, which was stored in a protective sleeve, discharged while it was still in the bag as he was bent over pulling it from the trunk. The trigger had caught on another item in the trunk as he was pulling it out. The blast struck Chief Dacy in the chest, killing him.
Chief Dacy, pictured with his daughter, had served in law enforcement for 31 years and had been chief of the Pierce City Police Department for six years.
Chief Dacy's brother, Patrolman John Dacy, was shot and killed in the line of duty on July 21st, 1969, while serving as a member of the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department.
