Deputy Sheriff Allen Heirtzler was killed in a single car crash as he responded to a fire call.
During the response his vehicle struck a cow in the roadway. The patrol car then left the roadway and struck a utility pole, causing it to burst into flames. Efforts to free him by other deputies and citizens failed.
Deputy Heirtzler served with the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Department for one year. He is survived by his parents.
