Officer Barksdale was shot and killed with his own weapon after responding to a domestic disturbance. Officer Barksdale engaged in a struggle with the suspect as he slit the throat of his six-month-old child, killing her. The suspect also shot another officer at the scene. That officer returned fire killing the suspect.

Officer Barksdale was survived by his three-year-old son, his mother, two brothers, and three sisters.
