Deputy Sheriff James Harper was killed and another deputy was wounded after being shot while responding to a call of gunshots at a residence. Deputy Harper arrived first and as he was talking with the suspect, a fight ensued. Deputy Harper was shot in the head at close range. The second deputy arrived moments later and saw the suspect standing over Deputy Harper's body. As the second deputy asked what was happening, the suspect opened fire and shot him in the shoulder and stomach.

I wish I could have done something, anything to make that situation turn out differently. I have felt guilty for years. You put your life in my hands and I tried my best to hold on to it. To Jim's family .. I am so sorry! I think of him often . RIP Deputy James Harper
