Fallen State Trooper remembered

WUSTSBORO – It was 24 years ago on February 14 that State Trooper Nathaniel “Nate” Burroughs lost his life while conducting traffic safety on Wurtsboro Mountain during an ice storm.

Burroughs had taken immediate steps to secure the safety of the lone occupant of a damaged vehicle on Route 17 by activating his emergency lights and protecting the scene with his troop car.

As he began interviewing the driver in front of the damaged car, a tractor-trailer skidded off the ice-covered road into the police car, forcing it into the initial car, which hit the two men. Both were thrown a considerable distance with Burroughs dying from his injuries a short time later at Horton Memorial Hospital in Middletown.

Burroughs was a 10-year veteran of the State Police at the time of his death on February 14, 1997. Prior to his Wurtsboro assignment, he was stationed at New York Stewart International Airport.
