Officer Charles Greenwald was shot and killed and another officer was shot and wounded after a man who set off a metal detector at the courthouse pulled out a gun and started firing. The man shot Officer Greenwald, killing him.

The suspect was shot and killed by a Mobile city police officer who was in the process of locking up her weapon when the incident took place, and also by a Court Police Officer nearby the incident.

Officer Greenwald had served in law enforcement for over 10 years. He was survived by his wife and two young sons.
