Gilbert J. Mast

Sergeant Gilbert Mast was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while he and another officer were conducting a traffic stop on McAlister Drive.

Another vehicle sped into the area and Sergeant Mast signaled the driver to stop. The vehicle instead sped up, hit a car, and then struck Sergeant Mast. He was dragged approximately 80 feet and killed almost instantly.

The student who struck him was charged with negligent homicide and felony hit-and-run.

Sergeant Mast had served with the Tulane University Police Department for six years and had previously served with the Kenner Police Department.

After 20 years, still recall receiving the news of this most tragic event. Gil was not only a man who loved being able to serve his community as a Police Officer but valued and contributed to others as to how one might become a better Police Officer and Leader
