William S. Winningder

Patrolman William Winningder was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man who was wanted for beating his wife. The suspect was able to gain control of Patrolman Winningder's service revolver and shoot him.

The subject fled the state but was arrested in Henderson, North Carolina, several days later when he was discovered on a freight train that was passing through the town. The man was released when Portsmouth detectives discovered they had the wrong man. The suspect was identified but it is not known if he was ever apprehended.
