Sheriff Jack Williams and Deputy James Lamer were shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspect.

The man opened fire on the officers. Sheriff Williams and Deputy Lamer were shot and killed. A Seaside constable was also shot and wounded but was able to return fire and killed the suspect.

Sheriff Williams was the first sheriff to be killed in Oregon to be killed in the line of duty. He had served with the Clatsop County Sheriff's Office for over two years.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 111th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
