Reserve Deputy Sheriff James Wier was killed in an automobile crash near the intersection of FM 1960 and Atascocita Road during a high-speed pursuit of a robbery suspect.
He and his partner were flagged down by an off-duty Houston police officer who was working secondary employment at a local bar. The off-duty officer informed them of an attempted robbery that had just occurred and gave them a description of the vehicle. The deputies located the vehicle and began to pursue it.
Another vehicle pulled in front of the fleeing vehicle. The driver was able to swerve around it, but the patrol car clipped the vehicle and swerved into a tree.
Reserve Deputy Wier was killed instantly. His partner was able to exit the patrol car on his own.
Reserve Deputy Wier had served with the Harris County Sheriff's Office for 13 months. He was survived by two sons.
