Sergeant Trainor was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on northbound New Jersey Turnpike in Burlington County while making a traffic stop. He had just obtained the driver's license and registration and was returning to his patrol car when he was struck.

The driver who struck him was charged with death by automobile and reckless driving.

Sergeant Trainor had served with the agency for just under 15 years. He was survived by his wife and daughter.
