Chief Deputy Talley and an agent from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation responded to an address in an effort to apprehend a wanted subject. When the officers arrived at the home, they were met by the suspect's, father who told them that the suspect was not at home. The father allowed the officers to search his home. While the officers searched, the father went into another room, grabbed a shotgun and fatally shot Chief Deputy Sheriff Talley. The agent returned fire, killing the subject. The fugitive they were searching for was not present.

Chief Deputy Talley had served with the agency for only 1 year.
