Detective Sergeant Glenn Sturgill was shot and killed while attempting to arrest armed robbery suspects.

He had observed the two men attempt to rob a woman at gunpoint on Claremont Avenue and chased one of the men into a cornfield. While taking the man into custody he was ambushed by the other suspect and shot and killed. The suspects, ages 21 and 25, were apprehended. A juvenile found to be involved with them was charged with aiding and abetting robbery.

The 21-year-old shooter was convicted of murder and robbery and sentenced to life. He has a parole hearing in September, 2021. His accomplice was convicted of manslaughter and robbery and sentenced to life. He has a parole hearing in September, 2016.

Detective Sergeant Sturgill was killed on his 30th birthday. He had served with the Ashland County Sheriff's Department for six years and is survived by his wife and two children.
