Trooper Archer was shot and killed after he and his partner stopped a car for questioning in Paxton, Illinois. As the troopers approached the vehicle the driver jumped out and yelled this his partner had a gun. As he attempted to flee he was shot and killed by the officers. As Trooper Archer approached the car to arrest the second suspect he was shot in the chest and killed. The suspect escaped but was later shot and killed by other officers.

Trooper Archer had served with the Illinois State Police for five years and was assigned to District 21.
