Sergeant Dennis Smedley was shot and killed when he was ambushed as he was leaving his home. He was shot in the back five times. Several suspects were tried for his murder but none were convicted.

Sergeant Smedley had served with the agency for six years. He is survived by his mother, two brothers, and sister.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 29th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. You will always be remembered and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and miss you for I know the pain and pride are forever.
