Patrolman Kevin Simmons was shot and killed during a traffic stop.

Unknown to Patrolman Simmons, the two offenders had just burglarized a local drugstore. The men began to struggle with Patrolman Simmons in an attempt to gain control of his service weapon. During the struggle, one of the attackers was shot in the stomach. The second was able to gain control of the gun and shoot Patrolman Simmons in the head.

The assailants escaped but were later captured. The shooter was sentenced to life in prison, where he later died.

Patrolman Kevin Simmons was a U.S. Army veteran and served with the Spencer Police Department for over 1 year. He is survived by his mother, four brothers, and five sisters.
