Private Shrewsbury succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained four days earlier when was shot in a gun battle with a gang of bootleggers near Lansing. He was taken to Oak Hill Hospital for treatment and then transferred to John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where he succumbed to his wounds.

Private Shrewsbury was a U.S. Army World War I veteran.
