Lago Sheppard

Deputy Sheppard was shot and killed by a former prisoner when he was summoned to the front door of the county jail. As soon as Deputy Sheppard opened the door the suspect shot him four times in the face. A policeman who was standing nearby shot and killed the suspect.

The suspect had been released from prison in 1947 after serving 14 years for murdering an 18 year old girl. He had just recently served a 60 day sentence in the Greenbrier County Jail on a drunk and disorderly charge. There was no definite motive for the attack on Deputy Sheppard.

Deputy Sheppard was survived by his wife.

I never got the chance to meet you; however, I am incredibly grateful and honored to call you my Great Grandfather. You gave so much to not only our family but the community. I know your watching down from heaven now and can see all the great ripple effects from your life that were passed to your son, then to my dad and then to my brother and myself. After all this time you are still loved and thought about daily; you are a hero and it still shines through today. I wish I had the chance to personally get to know you, but I am thankful for your service and dedication. You will not be forgotten. We love you. God Bless.
