Sergeant Nicholas Sheehan was shot and killed after he and another officer responded to a citizen's complaint on Clark Avenue near the Big Four Railroad Tracks.
Two men had robbed a safe at the Ohio Provision Company and attempted to burglarize the neighboring candy shop. The suspects fled and the officers split up to apprehend them. Sergeant Sheehan was chasing a suspect through a dark alley when he was shot.
The suspects were never apprehended for his murder.
Sergeant Sheehan had served seven years with the Cleveland police. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
