Constable Pedro Sendejo was shot and killed by a man who had just been arrested by the county sheriff for burglarizing a nearby house.
The sheriff handed the suspect over to Constable Sendejo. As the constable walked the man to his patrol car the man produced a .22 caliber pistol and shot Constable Sendejo twice in the chest. The suspect was charged with capital murder.
Constable Sendejo had served as constable for only nine months. He had previously served as a deputy for the Duval County Sheriff's Department for 14 years. He was survived by his wife five children.
