Laverne Daniel Schulz

Police Officer Laverne Schulz died of a heart attack. Five weeks earlier he was treated and released from a local hospital after suffering stab wounds when he was attacked by a group of juveniles while trying to disperse a crowd. He was working a uniformed off duty job at a movie theater at the time of the attack. The medical examiner ruled that his death was not a result of that attack.

Officer Schulz was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He had served with the South Miami Police Department for six years and had served in law enforcement for 18 years. He was survived by his wife, two children, mother, sister, and two brothers.

In your memory, our police station, rebuilt in the early 90's, bears your name. In 2007, the twentieth anniversary of your supreme sacrifice, a memorial stone badge was erected prominently at the station entrance. We were honored to bring your widow, Becky, your mother, brother and other family members from all over the U.S. to a ceremony dedicating that memorial. Your family was taken to the portion of Red Road (SW 57 Avenue) dedicated in your name and to the Miami Dade Police Memorial site where your family viewed your name honorably inscribed in perpetuity to be viewed by all who come. As this is written in 2020, 33 years after you were taken from us too early, the memorial at the police station has been refurbished and is more beautiful as ever - thanks to members of the Police Dept and community who never knew you but are determined to ensure you are never forgotten.
