Patrolman John Schneider was shot and killed while investigating a robbery in progress.

Patrolman Schneider and his partner were assigned to the 3rd Inspection District Detective Service. The two had just finished eating lunch at the Blue Danube Restaurant on East 75th Street in Manhattan and were outside when they observed a vehicle double park in front of the restaurant. Two men entered the restaurant while two others remained in the vehicle. Patrolman Schneider, suspicious of the activity, began to walk back toward the restaurant. One of the men quickly exited the restaurant and, while running to the double-parked car, drew a revolver and fired at Patrolman Schneider.

Patrolman Schneider was struck in the head and killed. His partner returned fire and struck the suspect several times, killing him. A second suspect was apprehended by a responding Patrolman. The two suspects in the getaway car were arrested later in the day.

All three suspects were charged with murder.

Patrolman Schneider served with the New York City Police Department for three years.
