Patrolman Edward Sawicki died from injuries sustained in a fall while on duty several years earlier.

He had been involved in a pursuit and chased the vehicle into neighboring Marblehead, Massachusetts. The driver then fled on foot to a nearby seawall. As Patrolman Sawicki chased him over the seawall, he slipped and fell 8-feet onto boulders below.

His back was broken as a result of the fall, and he remained a quadriplegic until his death several years later.

Patrolman Sawicki had served with the Salem Police Department for 25 years. He was survived by his wife, two sons, mother, and brother.
