Patrolman Sandlin was shot and killed after stopping a suspicious vehicle.

One of the men attempted to flee on foot after he was ordered out of the vehicle. The man shot Patrolman Sandlin four times when the officer grabbed him. The vehicle was loaded with illegal whiskey.

The suspect was arrested, convicted of Patrolman Sandlin's murder, and sentenced to 15 to 20 years on December 16, 1930.

Patrolman Sandlin was survived by his wife and three children.
