Jesus Sanchez

Correctional Officer Jesus Sanchez was shot and killed from ambush by several suspects who were attempting to free a prisoner who was being transported to court.

He and another officer had just left the California Institution for Men and were transporting the prisoner to a court hearing in San Bernardino for a previous escape charge. Two cars pulled alongside their vehicle and forced it from the road on Edison Avenue, near Euclid Avenue. The occupants then removed Officer Sanchez and the other officer from the vehicle and shot them both. Officer Sanchez was killed while the other officer was wounded.

The men, along with the prisoner, fled the scene. Four of the five subjects involved in the escape were convicted of either first or second degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Officer Sanchez was assigned to the California Institution for Men and had served with the agency for only five months.
