Agent Manuel Salcido was killed in an automobile accident while en route to the Del Rio Sector Headquarters, Texas, in a confiscated sedan. The vehicle went out of control on an ice-covered bridge in Val Verde Countyand struck an oncoming vehicle.
Agent Salcido was a Vietnam War veteran who served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He had served with the Department of Justice for one year at the time of his death and is survived by his wife. He is buried at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, TX.
