Patrolman Federico Saenz was shot and killed after stopping a pickup truck containing six people at 6:00 am. He had stopped the vehicle in an attempt to arrest two men who had been causing a disturbance in the Granejo district of McAllen.
While he was speaking with the driver one of the passengers opened fire on him, striking him in the ribs. As he crawled to regain control of his gun the suspect shot him again the forehead.
Five of the suspects were apprehended but the driver fled to Mexico.
Patrolman Saenz had served with the McAllen Police Department for two years. He was a widower and survived by his three young children, sister, and brother.
