Patrolman John J. Ryan was shot and killed while attempting to serve an arrest warrant on an armed robber at 1589 Clybourn Avenue.

During the arrest, the felon began to resist. He produced a revolver and opened fire, fatally wounding Patrolman Ryan.

Patrolman Ryan's killer was fatally wounded in the exchange and died later that evening.

Patrolman Ryan was survived by his wife and two children.

Grandpa, I never got to meet you, and your sons didn't have much time with you. My Dad, your son, was 3 years old when you passed away. Your wife did a fantastic job raising 2 boys without u. It was very hard, but she managed. Your son grew up and became a father of 6. What a wonderful dad he was. He passed on February 23rd, 2017. I'm sure you two are together and watching us.
