Officer Roback was shot to death while escorting a patient who had been injured in an accident.
Officer Roback had been driving his police car and transporting a patient who had been injured in an accident from the Hana Medical Center to Central Maui when the man attacked Roback. In the struggle, the man grabbed Roback's pistol and shot him in the chest. The suspect then shot his partner, Lt. Leslie Medeiros, who was in the back seat, in the face.
Lt. Medeiros was able to pull out his own handgun and fire six shots at the patient, killing him.
