Corporal Michael Ritchie was shot and killed when he interrupted a robbery in progress at a local convenience store at 5288 Lavey Lane in Baker.

He was in uniform, en route to work when he stopped at the store to buy coffee. A suspect was inside robbing the store and disarmed Corporal Ritchie when he entered. The man then used Corporal Ritchie's service weapon to murder him and the store clerk.

The man was apprehended, found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder, and sentenced to life without parole.

Corporal Ritchie had served with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office for only 10 months. He was survived by his wife and child.

OMG...didnt know this site existed.....only tonight did I realize that Mike and my son could be the same person ...both born in September.. only a few days apart... in fact was due on mikes birthday. ...both left handed...only 2 in the family history...both struggled in reading and math...both in trouble with the law at 16....both had baby girls that stayed in the hospital for the first 3 months..both 5'10 ...both the most loving people I've ever met.....both my best friends....mike, thank you for being in my life every day...I sorry I didn't get to tell I love you that friday.....Thank you for ALWAYS being my best friend.
