Patrolman Pare was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a bank robbery suspect.

Patrolman Pare had stopped the suspect's vehicle and placed the suspect against his patrol car. The suspect began to struggle, causing Patrolman Pare to slip on ice. The suspect then grabbed Patrolman Pare's service weapon and fatally shot him.

The suspect fled the scene in Patrolman Pare's patrol car but was later stopped by Detroit police officers after a pursuit on I-75. He was convicted of Patrolman Pare's murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Patrolman Pare was survived by his wife and five children.

This is for Peggy. I sat behind you at St. Tim’s and remember this day all to well. I never forgot about it. It was the saddest day we ever had in small town Trenton. I have since married a police officer. They are very special people. Your Dad will always be a legend-never forgotten. I hope you find comfort in knowing he died a hero.
