Officer Hugh Painter succumbed to injuries received in a motorcycle crash five days earlier while chasing a speeder on Washington Boulevard (modern-day Baltimore Avenue) at Muirkirk.

The driver of the vehicle turned his lights off and slammed on his brakes, causing Officer Painter to strike the rear of the vehicle at over 60 mph.

Officer Painter had served with the Maryland State Police for only six months.
