Detective Donald Manning was shot and killed at Oakland Lake Park while off-duty.
Detective Manning and his female friend were approached by five gang members who attempted to rob them. Detective Manning drew his gun and, in an exchange of gunfire, he was wounded. He was transported to a local hospital where he passed away shortly after midnight.
All five suspects were convicted of murder.
Detective Manning had served with the Fort Worth Police Department for six years.

View all 21 ReflectionsOne of the boys convicted of the murder was a student at Meadowbrook Middle School at one time. He pulled a gun out of his waistband and pointed it at a student being escorted to the office by a teacher. He was in the 8th grade. He had been involved in a fight. I feel sorry for Detective Manning that the boy didn’t get the help he needed. Gangs were huge at Meadowbrook.
