Dear Parole Board Members:

I respectfully ask that you DENY PAROLE to Connie Sue Tozzi, inmate number #00203326. This inmate's violent murder of Captain Peter Christopher "Chris" McCurley should preclude any parole consideration.

On Friday, October 10, 1997, Etowah County Drug and Major Crime Task Force Officers Captain Chris McCurley, Sheriff's Deputy Khris Yancy, Sheriff's Reserve Deputy Rick Correll, Rainbow City Police Department Detective Gary Entrekin, and three other officers attempted to serve a routine search warrant at a residence on Briarcliff Road in Rainbow City. When they arrived, they were met with gunfire from a semi-automatic weapon. Captain McCurley went to the front door and was immediately hit with an AK-47 equipped with a 100-round drum. After breaking down the door with gunfire, the male felon wounded Reserve Deputy Rick Correll, Deputy Sheriff Khris Yancy, and Detective Gary Entrekin. While he fired at officers, inmate #00203326 fed him more ammunition.

The felon, who was a Federal parolee, and inmate #00203326 were wearing full body armor and kept firing at officers for over 12 minutes. Since the officers could not get to their vehicles, they could not call for help. Finally, a deputy got away and called for help from a neighboring home. When responding officers arrived, they shot the felon in the leg. Inmate #00203326 finally surrendered, still clutching a pistol in her hand.

Inmate #00203326 purchased the weapons that they fired that day. She confessed she and the felon practiced for such a shoot-out. She had gathered the guns, money, and drugs into a car for their getaway. Inmate #00203326 only gave up after the felon had been captured, still holding a loaded 9 mm in her hand and wearing a bulletproof vest.

Detective Gary Entrekin suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his legs. He ultimately lost one of his legs and had to medically retire from the Rainbow City Police Department. Deputy Sheriff Khris Yancy was shot in the thumb and back. Reserve Deputy Rick Correll was shot in the hand and foot. Captain Chris McCurley was killed, shot 18 times.

Captain Chris McCurley was a dedicated officer who served with the Etowah County Sheriff's Office for 12 years and had just been appointed Chief of the Etowah County Drug Task Force. Most importantly, he was a husband, son, and father to two sons.

As a concerned citizen, and in the interest of public safety, I respectfully ask that you DENY PAROLE for inmate #00203326. Parole is a privilege, and the severity of her crime demands that she be made to spend every remaining day of her life in prison.
