Dear Parole Board Members:

I respectfully ask that you DENY PAROLE parole to Andrew J. Braden III, ID# 00093383. This inmate's violent murder of Patrolman William "Larry" Whitwell should preclude any consideration for parole.

On Saturday, April 4, 1981, at 11:16 pm, Patrolman Whitwell stopped a vehicle for speeding and reckless driving. Unbeknownst to Patrolman Whitwell, inmate #00093383 and the other occupant of the vehicle had just robbed a local fast-food restaurant. As he was talking with the men, the robbery call was broadcast over the radio, and Patrolman Whitwell observed a money bag in the vehicle. A struggle ensued, and one subject held Patrolman Whitwell down while inmate #00093383 shot Patrolman Whitman four times with his own weapon. Patrolman Whitman succumbed to his wounds during surgery at 1:36 am.

Officer Larry Whitwell was a dedicated officer who served with the Columbia Police Department for three years and in law enforcement for 12 years. Larry Whitwell grew up in Columbia, and in high school, he was an athlete, musician and became an ordained minister. Most importantly, he was a husband, a son, a brother, and a father to a three-year-old son.

As a concerned citizen, and in the interest of public safety, I respectfully ask that you DENY PAROLE for inmate #00093383. Parole is a privilege, and the severity of his crime demands that he be made to spend every remaining day of his life in prison.
