I respectfully ask that you DENY PAROLE to Douglas Parsons, inmate #000225817B. This inmate is responsible for the murder of Patrolman Daniel J. Smith of the Essex County Police Department and should preclude any parole consideration.

On Monday, September 17, 1984, Patrolman Smith initiated a routine traffic stop on Interstate 280 in East Orange. When he approached the vehicle, he was shot in the head by inmate #000225817B with a sawed-off shotgun. Inmate #000225817B was driving a stolen car and had just fled a gas station after stealing gas. After shooting Patrolman Smith, inmate #000225817B drove away from the scene. When the vehicle crashed into a median, inmate #000225817B fled on foot before being apprehended. While in custody, inmate #000225817B cheered when hearing on TV another law enforcement officer was killed.

Patrolman Smith was a dedicated officer of the Essex County Police Department for two years. When he was killed, he was wearing a bullet-proof vest, and his pistol was still holstered on his side. He was an emergency medical technician who was taking scuba lessons and attempting to qualify for the water rescue squad. More importantly, Patrolman Daniel Smith was a newlywed husband and a son.

Inmate #000225817B had a criminal record prior to murdering Patrolman Smith. In the days prior to killing him, he was involved in a string of burglaries, as well as stealing the vehicle he was driving in when he was pulled over.

As a concerned citizen and in the interest of public safety, I again respectfully ask that you, DENY PAROLE to inmate #000225817B. He poses a clear and present danger to society. Parole is a privilege and not a right. Justice demands that he be made to spend every remaining day of his life in prison.
