To the Parole Board,

I respectfully ask that you DENY PAROLE to Jason Matthews, inmate #00161459. This inmate was one of two people involved in the shooting death of Chief of Police Jerry Wayne Shelton of the Cottageville Police Department (SC) in 1989.

Chief Jerry Shelton was shot and killed at approximately 1 a.m. by two subjects after arresting them following a traffic stop. During the stop, Chief Shelton and another officer found bags of marijuana and cocaine. Chief Shelton transported inmate #00161459 and the female suspect to the police station at the Cottageville Town Hall building, where they did not have holding facilities. The female produced a handgun and gave it to inmate #00161459. Inmate #00161459 then shot Chief Shelton several times.

Chief Shelton was a dedicated officer who had served with the Cottageville Police Department for over a year. But most importantly, he was a son and brother to five siblings. He was also engaged to be married.

As a concerned citizen and in the interest of public safety, I again respectfully ask that you DENY PAROLE to inmate #00161459. Inmate #00161459 fled and did not turn himself in for a few weeks. Since then, he has changed his version of the events that night multiple times. Justice demands that he be made to spend every remaining day of his FULL SENTENCE in prison.
