The First & The Last

The first to sense the hostility of a suspect,
The first to react to protect his master,
The first to enter where danger lurks,
The first to detect the hidden intruder.
The first to take action against violence.
The first to sense his master’s joy.
The first to know his master’s sorrow or fear.
The first to give his life in defense of his master.
The last to be forgotten by those who work with others like him.
They know him as a “Partner”, not just an animal.

This poem was written for K9 Fargo of the Richland County Sheriff's Department in Honor of the unquestionable sacrifices K9's make in their everyday service to their partners and Agencies! Let this poem stand as a tribute to all our K9 Heroes who give the ultimate sacrifice!

“Our K9 Named Fargo"

He was just another Police dog,
I was going to have to train,
He was a beautiful “Belgian Malinois”,
And Fargo was his name.

We worked so hard together,
From sun up until Night,
His future as a Police Dog,
Became our daily plight.

This dog could do anything,
He was so easy to train,
Each day he made me so proud,
My partner “Fargo” was his name.

After months of rigorous training,
Fargo was ready for the road,
It didn’t take long to prove himself,
He was one of the best-I was told!

He hit on the drugs every time,
And tracked down the criminals too,
He did everything I ask of him,
There was nothing he wouldn’t do.

We stayed together day and night,
This dog I had to train,
He was my partner and my friend,
“Fargo” was his name!

It was the 16th of December,
With the moon and stars so bright,
When “Fargo” hit the trail of a robber,
My heart stopped when shots rang in the night!

My Partner was hit several times,
This K9 I had to train,
We cried because he didn’t make it,
My partner “Fargo” was his name!

K9 Graffit, You are another pearl in the bond of precious souls who connect across the heavenly skies to form God's beautiful string of heroes. Each time a precious being like yourself is harmed by evil, another crack is in my (our) heart. But, the good you did, by saving your partner and team members from harm, will stand for all eternity. The eagerness in you to go forward and support, guide and protect your partner was placed there by God and He chose you knowing that you would never back down. May He grant your partner and fellow officers peace and comfort, knowing that you were chosen for a specific moment in time - a second more or a second less would have been a bullet for your partner, but you took it for him. You have a very honored place over the Rainbow Bridge reserved for heroes. May you rest in beauty, comfort and peace.

Lord God of unfailing love, to those families of our beloved nation, the United States of America, who are suffering in the wake of the loss of a Law Enforcement K-9 family member in the Line-of-Duty, help us to provide support. Allow us to be their rock and fortress in a time of immense pain and uncertainty. Help us to keep them safe and nourished in their time of grief, suffering beside them as we move toward healing and reconciliation. Lord God, in Your compassionate mercy, hear my prayer. Amen.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” [Matthew 5:4 ESV]

K9 Graffit
Thank you for saving my life. You lead the way putting yourself in between us and unknown danger. You did so without hesitation or regard for your own safety. Words cannot express how deeply I will miss you. I will cherish the times we had. Whether it was me, hopping in the bite suit and being a human sized chew toy for you, to actively pursing suspects. To be there with you at the end was truly an honor. You are a hero to us all and especially me. I owe you a debt that I will never be able to repay you. Rest easy now my dear friend. I love you.
We have the watch.
